Anka (Anna) Padjen Burzic, 99, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 25, 2026.

Anka was born in Rakovica, Croatia (formerly Yugoslavia), on January 1, 1927. She was welcomed into the close-knit family of the local blacksmith and his wife as the youngest of 13 children—and she would go on to build an enduring legacy centered on kindness and compassion.

In November 1945, Anka married Ramo Burzic, a soldier from the nearby Bosnian town of Bihac, and together they began their family, welcoming five children. After enduring significant hardship and loss in Rakovica, Anka, with her young children in tow, followed her husband to the United States in 1957, settling in Chicago. There they welcomed three more children and became pillars of their local community. Anka determined and ever resourceful, taught herself English by reading the Dick and Jane primers along with her children as well as with the help of a Croatian dictionary and the Chicago Tribune. Known for her generous nature, Anka, together with Ramo, helped countless new immigrants from their homeland find jobs and establish themselves in America.

The Burzic household, with its open-door policy was always lively. Tireless and devoted, Anka seemed always to be at the stove preparing meals, or knitting, and sewing, keeping her growing family well cared for. She instilled strong virtues in her children, especially generosity and kindness toward those less fortunate, while also encouraging them to excel in school. Rest was neither something she knew nor desired; her work ethic was legendary.

Never one to shy away from a promising opportunity for her family, Anka and Ramo later moved to San Diego County, where they owned and ran various restaurants and businesses, finally settling in Sun City, to enjoy their golden years.

A devout Catholic, Anka lived with unflinching honesty and integrity, teaching her children to love God and to love one another. Her straightforward nature often surprised people, but just as often left them laughing—her sharp sense of humor was one of her most beloved qualities, one that lives on vibrantly in her offspring. Despite her seemingly endless strength, she was tender and affectionate with her loved ones. Her love of sweets and white coffee reflected her simple needs as well as her gentle and joyful spirit.

Of her many admirable virtues, her selflessness shone brightest, she never complained and remained an unwavering rock for her family throughout her nearly 100 years.

Anka is preceded in death by her husband, Ramo Burzic, and her sons, Rudi Burzic and Adam Burzic.

Anka is survived by her devoted children and their spouses: Kathy (Ibrahim or Brian) Kulauzovic, Mike (Tula) Burzic, Ann (Mike) Radeljic, Carol Dawson, John (Monica) Burzic, and Rich (Mary) Burzic; eleven grandchildren: Yasmina (Michael), Hiba (Nathan), Stephen, Kathy (Hrvoje), Raymond (Beth), Kelly (Drew), Ashley, Alex (Eirene), Nicole, Parker, and Trever; and several great-grandchildren: Mona, Mia, Brian, Evelyn, Demi, Aubrey, Eleanor, Charlotte, and Donovan—all of whom were blessed by her unwavering love and strength, and many of whom adoringly called her “Mala” or “Little Grandma.”
