It is with heavy hearts that the family of Anton Barbiani announces his passing on December 4, 2024, at the age of 90, at St. Joseph's Hospital with family by his side. Anton was born on June 6, 1934, in Senj, Croatia, to his parents, Ruska and Vlade.
From a young age, Anton's true passion was soccer. This love for the game stayed with him throughout his life. He played professional soccer in Austria and continued to stay involved with the sport in Thunder Bay, where he also coached and mentored many young players. Anton's greatest joy came when he introduced his daughter, Tanya, to soccer at the age of 4. Together, they spent countless hours in the backyard, playing the sport that Anton adored. For him, these were the best days-sharing his love for soccer with the little girl he cherished more than life itself.
Soccer also brought Anton to Austria, where he met the love of his life and future wife, Monika. Anton and Monika immigrated to Canada in 1963, first settling in Manitouwadge, where Anton worked in the mines. In 1976, they moved to Thunder Bay, where Anton began a new career with Canada Car, later Bombardier, from which he retired in 1999.
Anton found joy in many things, including spending time with the family, at camp fishing and cooking delicious meals for his loved ones. In his later years, Anton's greatest happiness came from his grandchildren. He cherished every moment spent with them, never missing a school event or the chance to hear about their day. When they were young, Anton would bundle them up in a stroller and take them on nightly walks around the neighborhood, ensuring they got fresh air before bedtime.
Anton is survived by his daughter Tanya (Barry) and son Bernie, grandchildren Brett, Sarah, Alexandra and Joey.
Anton was predeceased by his parents, Ruska and Vlade, and his loving wife, Monika.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph's Hospital, and to all friends and family members for their support during this difficult time.
