During his brief illness, Tony demonstrated courage of his Catholic faith and strength of spirit. Preceded in death by Elva, our mother and his loving wife of 49 years, Tony enjoyed the legacy of his two daughters Nada (and husband Chris Ciavarella) and Donna (and husband Rob Bryce) and loved being a proud Papa to his grandchildren (Anthony, Marco, Duncan, and Hadley).
Born in what is now Croatia, Tony emigrated as a young man to Canada to create a better life for himself. Eventually putting down roots in Hamilton, Tony worked hard as a carpenter for more than 35 years. Enjoying travel and as a proud Canadian curious about his adopted country, he would hook up a little canvass pop-up trailer each summer and explore our country’s vastness from coast to coast, collecting pennants at attractions along the way.
Relaxing weekends closer to home were spent together picnicking and fishing in nearby conservation areas. Tony later welcomed his two sons-in-law into the family like they were his own. His warm and gentle spirit, huge heart, and occasional corny dad-jokes would make you smile as he enveloped you with big strong hands. While he had a quiet way about him, he did enjoy a good party.
Following his retirement from Carpenter’s Union Local 18, Tony spent time enjoying his other passions – tinkering in his workshop, tending to his garden and sharing his homemade wine, sausages and smoked fish while watching the Leafs and professional wrestling.
During this time of COVID, the family has held a private burial. In lieu of flowers and as an expression of sympathy, the family would request you consider a donation to Canadian Blood Services. We express our sincere gratitude to the dedicated health care workers of the Hamilton Health Sciences.
