Antun “Tony” Beran was born on June 12, 1935 on the island of Hvar in Croatia. He grew up in the picturesque coastal town of Cavtat, south of Dubrovnik, where he lived with his parents Vicko and Jelisava and his siblings Vlado, Zdravko, and Ana.

As a proud Croatian with an entrepreneurial spirit he sought to escape from communist Yugoslavia and longed for the freedom and opportunity that the USA provided. He was a championship caliber rower and this afforded him the opportunity to escape. At a competition in West Germany, he left his team and defected from Yugoslavia.

He met lifelong friends in an internment camp in Germany and eventually made his way to the USA and to family in California where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia.

Tony was a pioneer in the medical device industry. He developed over forty patentable products and created his last patent pending device just six months ago.
He was a lifelong sailor and fisherman, and he loved to entertain on his boat, the “Getaway.”

Tony passed away this week surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia.

Tony is survived by his son, Mark, and daughter, Kerry; and his grandchildren Nick, Matt, Liana, Joseph, Jaqueline, and Liam.
