The Bacoka family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Bernardica (Maria) Bacoka. She passed at the age of 82 on October 23, 2021.
Daughter of Frane and Justina Vulin, Maria was born in Kukljica, Croatia on September 09, 1939. She is survived by her beloved husband Milan of 64 years, forever loved by her son Anthony and wife Tracy, son Milan Jr. and girlfriend Melly, granddaughter Blaire and husband Joseph.
Maria bravely immigrated to the United States in 1959 and settled in San Pedro, CA. She began working at Star-Kist Tuna Cannery for 14 years before venturing into business with Milan. Forever motivated, the duo opened their own family business, a liquor store in South Shores, later expanding to a grocery chain market in South Gate. As the years went on, they went into real estate and investments.
Maria was forever joyful and always game for adventure with her Milan. She enjoyed traveling and with her mischievous smile she could entice Milan to go anywhere.
Whether venturing back home to Kukljica, to Hawaii, to Australia and on her wild bus trips with friends and family. She always had a green thumb and loved spending time in her garden.
Maria was known for her unique and bountiful roses she brought from her home village. Known for the tightest hug and the warmest heart she will be deeply missed by her family and friends. America gave her opportunity, but it was truly her large community that made her life rich. Nothing brought her more joy than bringing family together with a warm meal and getting in all sorts of fun trouble with her only granddaughter.
All services will be held at Green Hills Mortuary, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. A viewing will take place Monday November 1, 2021, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. Chapel services will be Tuesday November 2, 2021, at 2:00pm followed by a private burial with immediate family. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Association. In respect to the bereaved please follow COVID guidelines. Social distancing and masks will be mandatory.
