Biserka "Pearl" Kupina, the daughter of Franjo and Bara Borosic, was born on December 5, 1934 in the small village of Volavje, near Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. She was the youngest of six siblings. She had three brothers, Bartol, Mijo, Dragutin, and two sisters Marica and Pavica. Biserka passed away peacefully on June 5th in Fresno, California, at the age of 86.

At the age of 21, Biserka married Petar J. Kupina and they lived near her large family in Volavje. In the late 1950’s, she and their son migrated to join her husband in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada to escape the former communist Yugoslavia, in search of a better life. A few years later their daughter Rosemary was born. Biserka was a homemaker and worked on the family orchards and vineyards. She was a hardworking individual, was always cooking and baking for her family, friends and at one time boarders at their home. In 1975 the family moved from Canada to Kerman, California.

Biserka, or “Baka” as her grandchildren called her, was a devout catholic that loved praying the holy rosary. She was an exceptional and extraordinary hostess. She showed her love through her cooking and baking, and always insisted that everyone must eat during visits with her. There was absolutely nothing that she would not place on the table for her relatives and friends. In addition to her cooking, no one could leave the house without eating some of her traditional Croatian cookies or pastries. She will always be remembered for these authentic delicacies. We are comforted knowing she is now baking them for the other angels in heaven.

She is survived by son Steve, wife Mary and grandchildren Danielle and husband Edson, Marina, Anthony and wife Crystal; and daughter Rosemary, husband Zvonimir and grandchildren Petar and Katrina. She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews in Canada, Milica Cukelj and Josip Vlasic as well as in Croatia, Slavko Vlasic and Dragica Bolfek, along with numerous relatives and friends in Canada, USA, Croatia and across Europe.

Our dearest Mama, mother-in-law, and Baka, the matriarch of our family, will live in our hearts forever.

Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns, & Blair Funeral Home, 836 E. Nees, Fresno Ave on Sunday June 20th from 11 am – 2 pm; with a Rosary at 2 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday June 21st at 10 a.m. PST at Holy Spirit Catholic Church 355 E. Champlain Dr., Fresno, followed by internment at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Fresno.

A live link to the Funeral will be available at https://vimeo.com/event/1071840

Remembrances in her memory can be made and will be forwarded to her childhood parish “Majka Bozja Snjezna” (Our Lady of the Snows) in Volavje
