Dr. Branko Placik, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in Beverly Hills, California, on August 5, 2025, at the age of 91. He was born on August 16, 1933, in Yugoslavia, now Croatia.
A Holocaust survivor, Branko overcame immense hardship in his youth, having lost most of his family during World War II. As a boy, he survived by hiding as an altar boy and tending goats in the countryside. Gifted and determined, he skipped several grades, graduated at the top of his class at the University of Zagreb, and went on to complete his medical training in the United States.
After immigrating, he built a distinguished career as a cardiologist, serving patients at local hospitals including City of Hope, White Memorial, and Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center. In the South Bay, he established a respected private practice, where he cared for generations of families. Branko also served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
He was known for his sharp intellect, principled nature, and love of learning. A true historian at heart, he read newspapers and magazines daily and enjoyed thoughtful discussions on world events.
Branko is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Ninfa; his children Otto, Irma, Daniel, and Simon; his many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a community of friends and colleagues whose lives he touched.
