Bruno Kalmeta, a resident of Shelby Township, Michigan, passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday, June 2, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born April 5, 1940, in Zadar, Croatia, he was the beloved son of the late Ante and Ana Kalmeta. Bruno immigrated to the United States in his the late 20s and built a life defined by hard work, craftsmanship, and dedication to his heritage and family.
Bruno began his career as a stone mason and stone cutter with the Wolverine Marble Company, where he shaped and handled some of the world's finest marble. A true artisan, he later founded his own business specializing in engraving and completing final dates on headstones and monuments-an act that brought comfort and closure to countless families.
His craftsmanship earned widespread recognition and is evident throughout Southeast Michigan..Bruno enjoyed working on many projects with Marshall Fredericks (renown sculptor) as well on the Henry Ford residence and the Chrysler Technology Center. His detailed engravings can also be seen at Comerica Park, on landmark buildings, and other residences throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. He was a proud member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union.
Bruno was a passionate supporter of the Croatian national soccer team and remained closely connected to his cultural roots visiting Croatia often throughout the year. Though born in a city, he found his true joy in nature, spending cherished time at his Lake George residence in northern Michigan. There, he embraced hunting and the peaceful beauty of the outdoors. Bruno will be remembered for his artistry, strong work ethic, quiet pride, and love for both his heritage and adopted homeland.
He is survived by his sons, Robert Kalmeta, and Tony (Vilma) Kalmeta. He was the proud grandfather of Albina, Emma, Marina and Sofia. His loving partner Margaret Lohmeier and her children, Greg, Dan and Jennifer and other extended family and friends also survive.
