Cedomir “Cedo” Capic, age 94, of Darien, IL passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 15, 2026. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, and he will be missed dearly. Cedo was born on April 12, 1932 in the village of Baska Draga, Otok Kirk (Island of Krk), Croatia.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ana Capic (Lauc), his two children, Frank (Diane) Capic and Cathy (Eddie) Markul, his four grandchildren, Alex Capic, James Markul, Evan Capic and Gabriel Markul. He is also survived by his sister Jolanda (Veljko Mladen) Kralj and her family in Croatia, and sister-in-law Kate Bojka and her family in Bosnia & Hercegovina, and nieces, nephews and cousins in the USA, Croatia and Bosnia & Hercegovina.
Cedo was preceded in death by his parents, Vinko and Marija (Tomasic) Capic; his sister Katica Rina Capic, and niece Harijeta Kralj-Miškulin.
Cedo was born 1932 in Croatia (formerly Yugoslavia) and demonstrated resilience amidst adversity at a young age. During World War II, Croatia was occupied by Italian fascists, then German Nazis. As a child, he witnessed his father captured and taken to a Nazi prison camp and was not released until nearly 18 months later in 1945 after the end of World War II.
Cedomir attended technical school in Rijeka, Croatia and graduated in September 1951. He worked with the Croatian Merchant Marines for several years and then immigrated to the USA in 1963. He arrived in Chicago, IL and lived and worked in several locations from East Chicago, IN, Billings MT, Las Vegas NV, and San Pedro CA until finally returning to Chicago in 1971. He met his wife, Ana, at a Croatian church picnic in South Chicago in 1971 and married in January 1972.
In 1972 Cedo & Ana bought their first home in East Chicago, IN and started their family. With his first home, he demonstrated his skills and desire to perform his own home improvement projects, which continued to his later homes in Munster, IN and Darien, IL. He accumulated a variety of tools that he was proud and ready to pass on to his grandchildren towards the end of his life.
In 1972 Cedo began a 25-year career at Inland Steel in East Chicago, IN as a steelworker laborer mostly within the 4-BOF (Blast Oxygen Furnace) unit. He retired in April 1997. He shared many fond memories of attending the annual summer picnic for labor retirees in Northwest Indiana.
Cedo became a naturalized US citizen and was eager to cast his right to vote in US national and local elections. He also maintained his connections to Croatia, attending many Croatian picnics and Croatian church events in the US, and multiple return visits to Croatia through the years. He was a devoted fan of Croatian soccer, always eager to watch their televised matches.
Cedo’s legacy of faith, hard work, and devotion to family and friends will continue to live on through all who knew and loved him. We are deeply grieved of his passing, but we find comfort in the blessed hope that he is now resting in peace and rejoicing in the presence of God in eternal life. Bog Blagoslovio našeg Cedo.
