Dagmar Schreckeis

Rođena:27.08.1951. (Pula, Hrvatska)

Preminula:13.02.2021. (Stickney, Illinois, Sjedinjene Američke Države)

Dob: 69

A passion for reading and books, a zest for travel, shopping and dining out, and bottomless caring for family, friends, neighbors and her cats: these are characteristics that defined Dagmar. Her favorite performer, John Prine, probably sang about all of this.

She was born to Gina Bastianic and Rudolf Schreckeis on August 27, 1951 in Pula, Croatia. In 1955, the family crossed the Atlantic to the USA. Dagmar made herself known on the ocean liner. As soon as her parents left the room at night, she played with the buttons to continuously page the stewards and crew. At her parents angry return, Dagmar always blamed sleeping younger sister, Hilda.

Dagmar lived her whole life in Chicago. Early childhood was marked by the birth of baby brother, John (whom she immediately doted on and protected), and by numerous moves to new neighborhoods/new schools. No matter. Dagmar made friends everywhere and did well in school. She graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1969. Then she attended Northern Illinois University where a little black cat, Scarlett, captured her heart. Graduation was prevented by a serious medical condition at the very end of her Senior year.

When Dagmar worked for a company, she gave it her all. Her career began as a proofreader and then editor for engineering consultants to the power industry, Sargent & Lundy. Later she was an integral employee of Kroch’s & Brentano’s Bookstore. She loved working at this previous downtown landmark and helping people who came from all over the world to buy books there. Her last position was with the Midwest Operating Engineers Fringe Benefits Office. From receptionist duties at the Local 150 union hall to participating in the digitalization of mailroom paper records, Dagmar brightened the days of people she met and worked with.

Family and friends loved Dagmar traveling the world because she always brought back suitcases packed with souvenirs for them! Exotic destinations included cruising the Nile in Egypt, Peru, Spain, Portugal (including Fatima), and Paris. She was just as happy exploring US destinations to visit Uncle John, or Aunt Leni and Uncle Joe, or old friends who had left Illinois. Before the pandemic, Dagmar found great joy going to all kinds of festivals, especially Shakespeare festivals.

To enable everyone who loved and will miss Dagmar to attend her memorial service, evites will be sent out for a Zoom meeting in the near future. Please contact hildamunch@gmail.com to be added to the evite list.
