With profound sadness, we are heartbroken to share the sad news of the passing of Danica (Donna) Kekich, our wonderful Mum, Nana, friend, mother-in-law and Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews in Ontario and Croatia on March 20, 2025.
Danica was a beloved and self-less parent to Lil (Mark Rousavy), Angela (Gregory Ambrose) and to her late son Vlado Kekich. She was also a devoted Nana to Devon Rousavy, Danielle Rousavy, Indira Ambrose and Alexander Ambrose. She is also loved by her sister Ana Delivuk, Sister-in-law’s Pavica Latincic and Jela Kekich and their families. She was predeceased by her parents Milos and Marta Latincic, Aunt Stanka Kovacevic, brother Janko Latincic, brother-in-law Tomo Kekich.
Danica was born in Tisovac, Croatia (former Yugoslavia). She married at a young age of 19 years in Mrzlo Polje, Saint Peter Church, Zumerak, to our Dad/Jeddo Ilija (Eli) Kekich. In 1957, the couple escaped Yugolsavia on foot and spent 2 years earning their passports in Austria. In June,1959 they emigrated to Canada to pursue a better life and build a future for themselves and for the family they wished to have and raise.
During the early 1960’s after spending some time in Surrey with Eli’s Uncle working on their farm, they relocated permanently to Nanaimo, BC. Danica held numerous jobs over the years, however, her pride and joy was her apartment building that was built in 1977. It is known to her grandchildren as “Nana’s Castle” and Nana’s place on Nob Hill.
She was fully committed to the care and management of her rental property. She spent many hours also working in her flower garden which gave her immense joy and satisfaction. Many tenants and passerbys admired her stunning flower garden. She also cherished many long standing relationships and friendships with her tenants.
Danica will be remembered as a woman of faith, her word, strength, wisdom, strong work-ethic, and generosity to everyone. And, most of all she held an unconditional love for her three children who were her greatest love story. She often expressed that “Without family, you have nothing”.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the amazing team at Trillium Communities, Woodgrove Manor, Nanaimo, BC for making her final two years there, welcoming and safe. All the staff at Woodgrove Manor brought a lot of warmth to her life. Thank you for being there for her. Your compassion and love for our Mum will always be remembered. Thank you, also for your many kindnesses and support you provided to our family. Bless you all.
Mum, you will never be forgotten and remain forever in our hearts. You are missed dearly.
Volimo te puno. Pocivaj u miru. Rest in peace Mum. “We love you, please remember that”.
Moja Dance, moja mama.
