David Lovich, 81, died peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2025. He was born in Igrane, Croatia during World War II to Ivan-Marijan Antičić-Lović and Franka Cvitanović Antičić-Lović.

To escape German occupation, David and his family fled to a refugee camp in North Africa. Life was difficult in Igrane after the war, but, David happily recalled playing soccer with improvised equipment and bonding with an orange cat that loved only him. At 15, he migrated alone to the US.

His first year, he picked oranges for his aunt Mary Lulich’s orange wine company in Buras, Louisiana and learned English from the other workers. He enrolled at Holy Cross High School, where he met lifelong friend David Dawson and started playing football. On weekends and summers, he worked at “Drago’s,” his aunt Gloria Batinich and her husband Drago’s beloved neighborhood restaurant on Harrison Avenue.

David attended Northwestern State University and played as a defensive end on the football team. In 1966, the team went undefeated and won the National Championship. He met his former wife, Louise Loupe Lovich. After college, he continued his football career with the St. Louis Cardinals, and with the Texarkana Titans. He then worked as a computer programmer at the Bank of New Orleans and later founded a construction company with his brother, Simun. Both did hard work in the hot summers of New Orleans until David’s retirement.

Despite all the challenges he faced, David stayed positive and enjoyed life. He loved hosting friends and family for BBQ dinners, parties, or lunch out on Fridays. He was a great friend to numerous people in the local Croatian community, many of whom were relatives. During the civil war in Yugoslavia, David set up a donation center in his backyard, sending care packages filled with clothing and essential items.

A huge fan of Croatia’s soccer team, David cheered for Luka Modric, whom he nicknamed “Mali” Luka and was ecstatic when Croatia made the 2018 World Cup finals. David loved watching football, especially favorite teams the New Orleans Saints and the Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish and favorite coaches Bill Belichick and Nick Saban.

David was an avid gardener transforming his backyard into a mini version of his Croatian village, vibrant with orange and fig trees. He generously shared his harvest with neighbors, family, and friends. He loved relaxing on the back patio watching birds and squirrels at the feeders or playing fetch with his granddog, Beatrix.

He is survived by his daughter Lillian Lovich and his sister Marica Knežić. He is preceded in death by his siblings Berislav Lović and Simun Lovich. His daughter thanks doctors Thomas Atkinson, Ashwin Jaikishen, Arshed Malik, and David St. Germain, Sr., and their staff, for their years of dedicated care.
