Etty Kadragich

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Etty Kadragich passed away on April 18, 2024, peacefully, at home. She was 102 years old.

Over the course of more than a century, Etty's life took many twists an d turns. She was born in Newport, Rhode Island, spent her toddler years living on Riverside Drive in New York City, went to Croatia at the age of 3 and grew up on the idyllic Dalmatian coast for the next 25 years.

Fleeing war-torn Yugoslavia and Communism, she returned to the United States in the 1950s and started over, ultimately settling in Astoria, Queens, where she raised her family and resided for over 60 years, until she was 95 years old. Then she began a new chapter, after her husband passed away, when she moved to Westchester to live with her daughter and son-in-law, where she stayed for her final years.

She delighted in her family, welcomed her first great-grandchild when she was 99 years old, celebrated her 100th birthday in style at a party in her honor surrounded by friends and family, recovered from major surgery the next year, and survived Covid at the age of 101.

Etty spoke four languages fluently – Croatian, Italian, English and French – the latter being her first language, because it was the only language her parents (a Greek father and Croatian mother) had in common when they met. She kept nearly 100 years of letters to and from family and friends in all four languages.

Etty had an indomitable spirit of optimism and grace, maintaining a cheerful outlook that was truly inspiring. She was deeply religious, and relied on her faith to sustain her through the many hardships and challenges she faced throughout her life. She was proud of both her Greek and Croatian heritage. She was guided by a strong moral compass, believed in honesty above all, and devoted herself to her family. She was an inspiration in so many ways – intelligent, funny, kind and warm-hearted, and a constant, loving presence in our lives. She will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her daughter Miriam (Tony), son Jeffrey (Lucille), daughter-in-law Grace, grandchildren Katherine (Josh), Alex, Jennifer (Parker), Daniel (Andrew), and two great-grandsons, Zachary and Elias. She was predeceased by her beloved son Peter and husband Zafer, both of whom we carry in our hearts, now along with Etty, forever. May their memories be a blessing.
