Frano (Frank) Elek passed away peacefully on Monday January 12, 2026, at age 90 with his children by his side after a brief illness and will now join his dear wife Sonja in heaven. He was a beloved father to Francis and Melisa, and adored Dida to Frankie and Ifan, who gave him the greatest joy.
Predeceased by his parents Stipan and Luca Elek, sister Pera Elek and her husband Jakov Elek, brother Luka Elek, sister Marija Markovic, and brother-in-law Frane Sutej. Survived by his sister-in-law Jaka Elek, sister Jaka Sutej, brother-in-law Ivan Markovic, sister Ivanka Elek, and sister Andelka (Angie) Mora and her husband Tony Mora, along with numerous nieces and nephews in Croatia, Canada, and the USA.
We particularly thank Angie and Tony Mora, who helped in immense ways, from ploughing and planting his garden to baking and cooking his favourite delicacies.
After Croatian independence, Frank and his late wife spent almost every summer in Sonja’s home village of Postira on the island of Brac where they leave behind dear family and friends, including Sonja’s sisters Tonka and Meri and his dear nieces and nephews who will miss his captivating presence.
Born in Otok, Dalmatia, Croatia, he left home at 13 to purse technical education in Rijeka, and this ignited a love of adventure. He first travelled the world with the merchant marines and would recall stories of many voyages, from the shores of the Middle East to the ports of the Americas, and this continued up until his passing. After living and working in several countries, he eventually settled in Windsor, Canada.
A talented retired tool and die maker, he insisted he could make or fix anything, and he was usually correct! Always an active soul, he enjoyed the company of family and friends. Among his many interests were chess, bocce ball, and soccer, and he would often participate and view them in his free time.
His essential human spirit is what those of us who knew him will miss the most, and this will live on.
Frank had tremendous praise for the care and support he was given at the Coronary Care Unit at Windsor Regional Hospital, and the family would like to sincerely thank the staff for that.
