The Slavich family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of their dearly beloved, incredibly caring, and truly unforgettable, George Mathew Slavich, on March 11th, 2023, in Santa Clara, California. He was 84.

George was born on November 27, 1938, in Hollywood, California, to Jack Slavich (originally Vladislavić) and Lenka Slavich (née Kirigin), who left Brač, Croatia, in 1932, and landed in Chile for several years before ultimately immigrating to Los Angeles.

Shortly after George was born, the family moved to San Jose, California, where his parents opened two kitty-corner grocery stores. George grew up playing pick-up basketball, enjoying time with friends, and running between his parents’ grocery stores to visit them. George attended Saint Patrick School in San Jose, California, and Santa Clara High School in Santa Clara, California, before becoming a reservist in the U.S. Army. For most of his adult life, he proudly owned and operated Grandview Hardware on the El Camino Real in Santa Clara, California, which served the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly 50 years before George retired in 1998.

George lived an extremely rich life following retirement. He lawn bowled four times a week, went for walks every day, went to the gym every afternoon, and read and talked with friends at the bookstore every night. A true lover of all people and places, he visited more than 80 countries, met millions of people, engaged each and every one of them in conversation, and found friends in individuals from all cultures and walks of life. He visited his parents’ birthplace, Mirca, Croatia, many times, and always felt deeply connected to his original family home and many cousins there.

The greatest joy of his life was his only son, George, who he ardently supported at every single soccer game, swim meet, band event, and graduation. He was, simply put, the proudest father there ever was. More recently, George basked in the glow of his young granddaughter, Stella, who he loved walking with and reading to, and who he called each and every evening to say goodnight.

George is survived by his former wife, Slavenka Kirigin; his son, George Michael Slavich and wife, Britton Shores Slavich; his granddaughter, Stella Rose Slavich; his numerous cousins and extended family in Croatia and elsewhere; and the many, many friends with whom he read, walked, lawn bowled, and laughed throughout the years in Santa Clara and beyond. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Slavich; his mother, Lenka Slavich; and his older brother, Anthony Slavich.
