George Volkov Jr. was born May 29,1945 in Zagreb, Croatia, to his parents, George and Matilda. At the age of 13, his family left for the Americas, settling in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After seven formative years, he and his parents headed to the United States, where George truly achieved the American dream.
George earned a BS/MS in electrical engineering from UConn, served in the U.S. Army, married his beautiful wife Linda (Stone) Volkov in 1971, and had five daughters. His career centered around military and academia. George worked as an engineer for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in New London, and Newport, R.I. He was also an associate professor of computer science at Three Rivers Community College.
A dedicated explorer, George spent years adventuring through the U.S. and Europe with his family. Yet his most remarkable journeys took place beneath the ocean's surface while testing sonar systems he helped design for the U.S. Navy.
He was truly a family man, putting his wife and daughters' best interests before his own. He was a wonderful, generous and loving dad to his five daughters and a faithful and devoted husband to his wife Linda of almost 55 years.
George passed away in Pittsburgh, Pa., March 25, 2026, surrounded by his wife, daughters and eldest grandson. He was laid to eternal rest March 26, 2026, at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies with military honors.
George is survived by his wife, Linda (Stone) Volkov; daughters: Elizabeth Menker, Katherine Volkov, Margaret Archinaco, Helen Behn, Christine Royce; and four grandchildren.
