Henry Brajkovic

Henry Brajkovic, 100, of Hamden passed away on Memorial Day, May 26, 2025. Henry was the beloved husband of 54 years to Rosanna DiBenedetto Brajkovic, and the father of John Anthony Brajkovic. He was the son of the late Ante and Milka Banic Brajkovic.

Henry was born in the Bronx in New York City on January 3, 1925. He lived under German occupation in Yugoslavia during the Second World War and then worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency. He received a BA from City College of New York and an MA from Teachers College of Columbia University. Henry taught English at Fair Haven Junior High and then History at Wilbur Cross High School for over two decades. He was one of the "New Haven Ninety" jailed in the 1975 teachers' strike.

Henry was also a member of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute for many years. He retired in 1996 and continued to enjoy reading the news, listening to classical music, and taking road trips with his family to visit museums and historic sites. Henry was fluent in Croatian, Serbian, French, and German, and also knew Latin, Italian, and Russian. He was an accomplished accordion and piano player and performed live on radio when only twelve. Henry gathered an extensive collection of books on European history, Anglo-American fiction, French literature, and Slavic languages.

In 2009 Henry was stricken with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and spent eight months paralyzed on a ventilator in the hospital. Fortunately, he made a full recovery and was able to walk and to read again. He often accompanied his family out of the house on errands, and toured Cape Cod with them last fall. Henry was predeceased by his sister Mary and his infant brother Ludwig.
