It is with saddened hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Ivan (Ivica) Mrežar in his 86th year on February 15th, 2022 surrounded by his loving wife and children. Reunited with his parents Bara and Pavao (nee Severin), along with his Mother-in-law and Father-in-law, Ana and Adam Biro, as well as siblings Tone, Evica (Halic), Mato, and Ivica. Survived by his beloved wife Mary (nee Biro), children Paul (Antoinette), Darlene and Kimberly (Michael). He was a cherished and proud Dida to grandchildren Alicia (Derek), Michael (Lauren), Amanda (Gregory), Kasandra, David, Jessica, and Kylee and his great-grandchildren Jack, Olive, Ilija and James, all who will fondly remember his adoring embrace.
Ivica will be missed by his extended family and friends in Canada, Croatia, and the United States. Ivica arrived in Hamilton from Mirkopolje, Croatia in 1958. It was on September 5th, 1959 that his brother Tone introduced him to his “dušo”, Mary. One dance was all that was needed to know they would continue to dance through life together, marrying five short months later. February 27th, 2022 would have marked 62 years of marital bliss. Ivica and Mary were the first to the dance floor at any event, spinning jovially to their favourite waltzes and polkas. Ivica adored his family and revelled in time spent with them, telling stories of his childhood, sharing his love of song, his homemade wine, and “special juice”, a treat which his grandchildren always looked forward to. A longstanding member of the Croatian National Home, Ivica looked forward to being among friends at his weekly bowling games and wouldn’t miss the opportunity to sing and play his bugarija with his tamburica group, Hrvatsko Srce, where his presence will be deeply missed. A dedicated member of Holy Cross Croatian Church, where he volunteered his time as an Usher and as an acting member of the Financial Committee, his faith was a pillar of who he was.
Ivica’s vigor was unparalleled, living each day with enthusiasm and gratitude for the life he was given and the life he created. We will never forget his kind smile that he presented with a slight tilt of his head, and the warmth that was felt by all in his presence. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there; I did not die. Sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sewchand and nurse Lynn, for their dedication, compassion and kindness during this difficult time.
Due to COVID-19, all events are restricted to a specified number of attendees. The family will receive family and friends at MARKEY DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 1774 King Street East, Hamilton on Friday from 2-4pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Croatian Church on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 10 am. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
If desired, donations to Holy Cross Croatian Church would be appreciated.
"Puno te volimo dragi suprug, Tata i Dida. Počivaj u miru Božjem."
