JACOB STANISH, Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Father-in-Law, Brother, Uncle, Kin and Friend, peacefully passed away on September 21, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was a good and honest man. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Jacob was born on July 23, 1939 in Sibenik, Croatia to Ivan and Stana Stancic. The family lived in the village of Slivno where Jacob was brought up with four siblings, all sisters. At the age of thirteen, he began work in Sibenik as an apprentice in a butcher shop, while also completing trade school. One evening in the fall of 1956, Jacob escaped communist Yugoslavia along with three of his buddies in a small fisherman's boat, tossing, drifting, and rowing their way across the Adriatic Sea on a treacherous seven-day journey to Italy and to freedom. From Italy, his journey continued onto France, where he lived and worked in Paris and awaited Uncle Jacob's sponsorship to America.
Jacob immigrated to America in 1959, settling in Los Angeles in 1962. Shortly thereafter, he received his high school diploma. Four years later, he was employed as a draftsman at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, where he was promoted to Supervisor and where he had a fulfilling career for 36 years until his retirement.
In 1968, Jacob and Mirjana Busurelo were married at St. Anthony Croatian Catholic Church. This is where they began and this is the foundation upon which they built their family life together. With their faith in God and with their love, and with his deeply ingrained family values, unwavering fortitude, reverence of Croatian tradition, hard work ethic and as an honorable citizen of his new home, the United States of America, Jacob was a wonderful father to his children, Christine and Ivan. His adoring children were blessed with the greatest gift of a father who was a constant and stable presence of love and discipline and who was a firm believer in education.
Jacob was an active parishioner of St. Anthony Church for over 60 years, where lifelong friendships were formed that reinforced the family life greatly. He, together with his wife, was known for his awesome barbeques and elegant dinners celebrated in the company of family and friends seated at the table for countless hours immersed in inspirational conversation, words of wisdom, lots of laughter and fun and Jacob's undeniable wit and charm. He is and will be missed immensely.
He was adventurous. He enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to garden. He loved to dance. He loved to travel and he loved to go for drives. He took the family on fantastic trips. Most of all, being in Croatia, u Lijepoj Nasoj Domovini Hrvatskoj, is forever etched in the memories and in the hearts of his family.
The family of Jacob Stanish is proud of who he was and all that he achieved. He was a faithful Catholic, always a proud Croatian and always a proud American. He was devoted and dedicated to his family and always a loyal friend. The exquisite melody in his golden heart and the joy in his soul came through like a ray of sunlight that was felt by all. We are eternally grateful to God for all the blessings we have received.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Mirjana, his loving daughter and son-in-law, Peter and Christine Zupan, his loving son and daughter-in-law, Ivan and Shona and his cherished grandchildren Kelson and Mira. He is also survived by his sisters Mila and Zlata and nieces and nephews and the entire extended family.
