John Nick Zugar passed away February 18, 2026, at Kaiser South San Francisco after a brave yearlong battle with primary CNS lymphoma. Beloved husband of 52 years to Sue, father to Melissa (Jesse) and Christina (Jeff), grandfather to Madison and Natalie, brother to Ken (Cathy), brother-in-law to Jerry (Sandy), uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend.
Born December 12, 1945, in San Francisco to Chris Zugar and Mary (Frantin) Zugar, immigrants from the island of Olib off the coast of Croatia, and brought up in the Bayview neighborhood, where he made many wonderful lifelong friends. By age 12, he was already known as a jovial, good-natured fellow with no complaints according to the newspaper he delivered on his paper route. Attended Lowell High School and received an accounting degree from San Francisco State. During those years, he worked at Candlestick Park as a vendor.
After graduation, he became an auditor with the GAO in San Francisco, where he worked for 35 years. Respected by his colleagues, he made many treasured friendships, which continued after retirement. He thoroughly enjoyed getting together with them, organizing many lunches and parties. An avid water skier, he made countless trips to Clear Lake throughout his entire life.
It's where he met his wife Sue, the love of his life, who also enjoyed visiting the lake and water skiing. They were married at Grace Lutheran Church on September 1, 1973. In 1975, they bought a new home in Pacifica. As he did everywhere, he made many cherished friends there, playing tennis, golf, Pedro and poker. After retirement, he enjoyed a part-time bookkeeping job at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Labor Day weekend at the lake was a favorite family tradition.
A skillful cook, he and Sue loved hosting the family for an over-the-top dinner every year on Christmas Day. His stuffed mushrooms and twice-baked potatoes were not to be missed! Devoted fan of the 49ers, Giants and Warriors. Favorite quote: Angels fly because they take themselves lightly.
