Dob: 89

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend John, on May 25, 2021 while surrounded by family.

Survived by his daughter, Margaret (Darin) de Vries and son, Johnny Suschnik. Very much missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Lucas, Alexandra and Daniella de Vries. He will also be missed and lovingly remembered by numerous family and friends in Canada, US, Australia and Croatia. Predeceased by his wife, Patricia (nee Haddad) Suschnik in 1991. Also predeceased by his parents, Sebastijan and Antonija Susnik, his four brothers and three sisters who resided in Canada and in Croatia. John will also be missed by his loving friend and companion, Gianna Tomasini.

John was born on April 26, 1932 in Klana, District of Opatija, Croatia and immigrated from Austria to Canada in 1957. On arriving to Kelowna, he began working for the Occidental Fruit Company. In 1965, he and Pat were married. He went to work at Mica Dam for three years, followed by Brenda Mines from its inception until its closure in 1990. After the closure of Brenda Mines, John went to work at the Glenmore Irrigation District until retirement.

John and Pat were married for twenty-five wonderful years. Together they operated an orchard in Glenmore producing apples and cherries. He loved all aspects of gardening and was always happy to share his prized produce and beautiful flowers with family and friends.

Outside of working hours, John was an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and fishing and was particularly fond of the “Greystokes” where he made many trips through the years to camp, hike and to fish. He was an avid alpine mountain climber, hiker and skier and was happy to share many stories of his treks in Austria, Croatia and Canada. He enjoyed his many ski trips to Big White and Silver Star. He was an honorary member of the Kelowna Italian Club and always looked forward to the Club dinners. John was a loving, kind and generous man with a good sense humour and a positive outlook on life. His greatest joy was being a grandpa to Lucas, Alexandra and Daniella and watching them grow into amazing young adults. Family was everything to him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and to those whose lives he touched even for just a short time.

Not a Day Will Go By (By Kelly Roper)

Not a minute, not an hour, Not a day will go by We won’t think of you And smile or sigh.

You enriched our lives While you were here. Now we must learn to live Without you so near.

Time may soften the blow, But your memory won’t fade. Not a day will go by We won’t wish you could have stayed.

The family would like to thank the staff and medical professionals at the Kelowna Hospice House for your loving care and kindness to John in his final days and for your compassion to John’s family. The family would also like to extend a thank you to John’s doctors who cared for him.

A Funeral Service will be held to honour John, however due to the current covid-19 restrictions, it will be by invitation only.
