Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church

John L. Viculin passed away on December 5, 2023, at the age of 82. John was born in Chicago, IL, on April 24, 1941, to John and Milka Viculin, both Croatian immigrants from the village of Kastel Luksic.

They operated their family floral shop on Chicago's south side until they moved to San Pedro in 1947 when John was six years old. John attended Holy Trinity School near his San Pedro home and graduated from Mary Star of the Sea High School in 1959.

He served as Student Body President and played basketball and baseball.John earned a degree in History from Loyola Marymount University in 1963, graduating with honors. He then attended the UC Berkeley School of Law for one year. He found his calling was education, returned to Loyola Marymount University, and earned his master's degree in 1966.

John began his teaching career at Airport Junior High School, teaching English. He then taught Social Sciences at Rolling Hills High School and became Assistant Principal. Starting in 1975, John was involved with the planning, construction, and grand opening of Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach and became the school's first Principal. In 1981, he moved to Gahr High School as Principal. John's career came full circle in 1986 when he returned to the classroom at Haskell Junior High School, teaching English and Yearbook until he retired in 2004.

John was a resident of Huntington Beach for over 45 years. He enjoyed time with neighbors at the community pool and walks to the beach. John was very proud of his Croatian Heritage and loved to immerse himself in the culture by spending summers along the Dalmatian Coast with his relatives and traveling the country. He attended Croatian picnics and festivals all around the United States.

John had a love for music, like his father, who played multiple instruments, and his uncle, who composed Croatian music. He loved to sing, and he learned to play the tamburitza. John shared his musical talent with a Klapa Group, Tamburitza Band, and the Mary Star Croatian Choir and would join in and sing along in his tenor voice with anyone. Of course, John had a great love of Croatian food and would attend lunches at the club in San Pedro to enjoy a great meal and see his friends.

He would greet everyone with a warm welcome and was always willing to give an impromptu history lesson.John will be missed by all who loved him; his charming smile, engaging stories, and kind presence will never be forgotten.John was predeceased by his parents, John and Milka Viculin.

He is survived by his brother Jordan (Mary Ann) Viculin; Nieces Lynn (Eric) Schenk and Susan (Brendan) Kremer; Great Nieces Lauren Schenk, Jordan Kremer, and Allison Kremer; Great Nephew Jared Schenk; beloved relatives in Croatia and many dear friends.
