John Ljubomir Vlahovich, award-winning designer, died on August 5, 2026, in Tacoma, WA. He was 88.
It began in the 60s, an era of counterculture teeming with possibility; John tapped into that experience. He met the girl he would marry, and together John and Mary started Vlahovich Design, a design studio in Tacoma. The office became a unique learning ground for young apprentice designers.
Born in San Pedro, CA, John was second-generation Croatian. His parents emigrated from Brac, Croatia to Gig Harbor, WA, where his father owned and operated a commercial fishing boat. John fished during high school and college but did not inherit a love for the business.
Bellarmine Prep led to Seattle University, where he excelled in art classes. John went on to exhibit his paintings at SAM, Frye Museum, the Governor's Invitational, the University of Puget Sound, and the Tacoma Art Museum. He continued to paint and sculpt well into his 80s.
He thought in broad strokes and bold color. He saw infinite possibilities in repurposing building materials. He rescued old signage and lived with it as art. He was endlessly curious about structure, typography, and art in the built environment. He cooked spaghetti sauce as a portal to his Croatian past. He could talk for hours about Tacoma. John leaves a legacy of unparalleled visual work, an indefatigable passion and charisma, and 28,000 photos on his iPhone.
He was predeceased by his son Max Vlahovich. He will be deeply missed by Mary, his wife of sixty-two years; son Tyler (Amy and Z), Los Angeles; son Sam Vlahovich, Los Angeles; and stepson Dan Kukes, Montana. Services will be private.
