Joseph Anthony Brusich was born, in Paprata, Risika, Otok Krk, Croatia on June 13th, 1919. In 1952 he joined his father in Canada first in Alberta and then Vancouver Island. In 1956 he was joined by his love Kate and they married the same year. They eventually settled in Burnaby where they have resided since 1967.
Joseph Anthony Brusich passed away in the early hours of January 27, 2022 at the age of 102 years. He was predeceased by his father, Mate Brusich, mother ,Margaret Brusich and brother, Mate Brusich. He is survived by his loving family, wife: Kate Brusich, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great-grand nieces, great-grand nephews, godchildren and dear friends in both Canada and Croatia.
Joe, was a loving and devoted son and husband with a generous heart who welcomed all to his home and always offered a seat at his table. A proud Canadian and a proud Croatian who took great care to nurture body, mind and spirit with discipline and consistency.
Joe, was a self-taught man with an natural passionate curiosity about the world around him that he satisfied daily through his readings and writings. On any given day you could find Joe, researching a topic, buried deep in his encyclopedia or one of the many papers/periodicals he subscribed to. He was well informed on a variety of world events and enjoyed sharing his knowledges with others.
He especially loved vegetable gardening, wine-making and woodworking which he avidly pursued as long as he was physically able.
An inspiration to us all, he would start off his morning with daily stretches, sit ups and weight lifting. Many of us remember his love of walking and how, when he retired, he walked to morning mass daily, a 6km round trip, into his early eighties. When that distance became too great he replaced it with a 3km round trip to the grocery store until his 94th year.
A devout Catholic and man of deep faith and morals, Joe was a long-standing member of the Knights of Columbus and an active parishner at Holy Cross Parish in Burnaby, BC.
He will be sadly missed and we hold him forever in our hearts.
