It breaks our hearts to share that our dad, grandpa, brother, friend, and uncle, Joseph Secan, passed away unexpectedly this weekend. All those who knew him can surely agree he was one of a kind! A true free spirit and an old school classic guy.

He could talk to anyone about anything - politics, history, aerodynamics, Elon Musk's latest's endeavers, Croatia, any author, Yugoslavian picnics, food, art, music, gardening, restaurants you name it.

He was an expert on so many things and had a passion for everything. He was a member of almost every art museum in LA and frequented them often! It was amazing how current and up to date he was on everything, but never owned a cell phone or used a computer to Google a thing! He regularly used his original set of ancient Encyclopedias, subscribed to countless magazines and newspapers and read voraciously to expand his understanding of topics that interested him! Museums, libraries, and indoor dining were the things he missed most during the Covid shutdown.

Joe was born in Pontiac, Michigan in 1933 and headed west in the 50's. He had 6 siblings: Frank Secan, Anna Secan Devers, Barbara Secan Lockshaw, Mary Secan Smith, Michael Secan, and Nick Secan. He graduated from UCLA, served in the US Navy, and settled in Manhattan Beach and found his paradise.

He walked the Strand every day stopping to say hello to all those he knew along the way - his normal distance was somewhere between 10-15 miles a day. He was active till the finish and loved life to the fullest. The loss of his dear daughter Kristine on May 5, 2020 left him broken hearted. He was lifted with the angels in Heaven on Kristine's birthday. We will miss you Grandpa Joe!
