Katarina (Katharina) Margan, born on October 13, 1933, in Croatia, peacefully passed away on February 16, 2025, in Virginia at the age of 91.

At the age of 23, Katarina embarked on a life-changing journey to the United States, arriving in New York City to meet her soon-to-be husband, Drago, for the very first time after two years of correspondence. This meeting blossomed into a deep and enduring love, culminating in a marriage that lasted 39 wonderful years until Drago's passing in 1995. Her greatest achievement was raising four children in America, a testament to her dedication and love as a mother.

Katarina had a contagious zest for life and a passion for world travel. She touched the lives of many friends and acquaintances with her assistance and mentorship. A profoundly religious woman, she was a force to be reckoned with and beloved by all who knew her. Her volunteer work at Mary Immaculate Hospital and the hospice center exemplified her compassionate spirit. She also served as Vice President of the Hampton Roads Republican Women’s Club and cherished her time with a rosary prayer group where she met lifelong friends.

Katarina was preceded in death by her husband, Drago; her son, Steven; her sister, Julia; her brothers, Vlako and Zvonko; and her niece, Katarina Hrkas. She is survived by her loving family: daughter, Deanna Hurtig (Carl); sons, Peter Margan (Lisa) and Anthony; grandchildren, Victor Hurtig (Amanda), Brian Hurtig, and Kate O’Hare (Hunter); and great-grandchildren, Carl and Ella Hurtig. She also leaves behind her sister, Leja Hrasky, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
