Katherine was born and raised on the family farm at Ellscott and, although she moved from Alberta after she graduated from High School, her deep attachment to the farm remained and she returned there very frequently to visit, always extolling the beauty and vastness of this northern landscape. She obtained a B.A. with high honors in Political Science from Quincy College in 1964 and went on to obtain an M.A. in Political Science (International Relations) from the University of Chicago in 1968.

Her professional career began at the American Bar Foundation in Chicago where she was Technical Services Director and was responsible for managing research projects and for data analysis from 1968 to 1988. For two years she managed the information system at the Chicago Legal Aid Bureau, one of the largest in the United States. Just prior to her moving to Washington DC, Katherine worked on a special assignment for the Department of Justice in Ottawa and for the National Institute of Justice where she conducted evaluation research on the impact of the federal sentencing guidelines on the criminal justice system in the U.S. Her work at the American Sociological Association (ASA) consisted of research, analysis, and writing on policy, governance, and programmatic functions. From 1988 to her death, she served as senior policy analyst at the American Educational Research Association, where she was centrally involved in the founding of the World Education Research Association and the Americas Education Research Network, data sharing and open knowledge initiatives, and COVID-19 impact studies on early career scholars and doctoral students.

Katherine travelled extensively. In addition to two trips around the world, she had a particular affinity for Egypt, Afghanistan and Iran, visiting each of these countries numerous times. She continued to be interested in cross-cultural issues and international affairs and was very involved in matters pertaining to the Homeland War in Croatia (1991-95). Katherine was an outstanding photographer and frequently contributed photo documentation to exhibits and lectures on the Middle East, Balkans and the Far East. In addition, she wrote and/or collaborated on numerous publications and contributed to many other volumes and articles during her time at the American Bar Foundation, the American Sociological Association and at the American Educational Research Association. Everything Katherine did reflected her love of family, friends, cultures, and a continuing need to learn; she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A memorial and internment will take place in Alberta, Canada at a future date. If you wish to honor Katherine’s memory, a donation to one of the following would be appreciated:
