Leonard Lenko Baric passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in San Pedro, CA on November 24, 2023, at the age of 82.
Leonard is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Angelka; son, Jack Baric (Denice), daughter, Jeanette Baric, and grandchildren, Kyle and Katija Baric, sisters Vinka Kapulica, Ankica Profaca, and Jana Markusovic, as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Leonard J. Baric, parents, Jakov and Ivanica Baric, and sister Blazenka Spaleta.
Leonard was born on August 28, 1941 in the village of Sutomiscica on the island of Ugljan in Zadar County, Croatia. At the age of 15, he escaped communism with his sister Vinka and several cousins and friends by boat to Italy. Leonard spent four years in Italian refugee camps before getting his papers to emigrate to the United States. Leonard arrived in San Pedro to the home of his aunt, Teta Jackica Petros.
He later met his future wife, Angelka Mirkovich at San Pedro High School. Leonard and Angelka were married on September 28, 1963 and soon after they started their family.
Leonard worked for a number of years at Todd Shipyard before changing careers and becoming a real estate agent. He spent twenty years selling homes with Califano Realty in San Pedro.
Leonard was a proud Croatian and was a member of the Croatian American Club of San Pedro for many years, often volunteering, serving on the board and various committees.
Although he loved his Croatian homeland, he also was a very proud American who was very appreciative of the opportunities his new country provided. Above all else, Leonard was a family man who gave everything he had so that his wife, children and grandchildren could have a better life. His soft spot was his grandchildren!
