Ljubica (Violet) Grgas, age 88, earned her golden wings and met the Lord on February 8, 2022 with her family by her side. She was born on October 24, 1933 to Joe and Frana Sunjka in the small fishing town of Zablace, Croatia.
In the spring of 1949, Ljubica, along with her brother Vince and mother immigrated by boat to New York and shortly after, they moved to San Pedro of which she called home for the next 73 years. Violet and Steve knew each other at a young age in Zablace, but it wasn't until they reconnected through family friends in San Pedro that they began dating in 1953.
They fell in love and were married on September 24, 1955 and honeymooned at one of their all-time favorite vacation destinations, The Flamingo in Las Vegas. Shortly after, they welcomed their first child, Linda, in 1956. During this time, Violet worked at Starkist Cannery and four years later, she and Steve brought home their second daughter, Rosemary, in 1961. Then in 1965, Violet and Steve had their son Steve Grgas Jr. and she worked as a seamstress until her children were of school age and then returned to work at the cannery.
When she retired from Starkist, taking care of her grandchildren became her most joyous full-time job. Ljubica enjoyed traveling with her family and friends back to her homeland in Croatia as well as trips to France, Hawaii, New York, Lake Tahoe, Lake Havasu, and many casinos throughout Las Vegas and Southern California.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, sweetheart and best friend of 66 years, Steve Grgas, their three children, Linda Grgas, Rosemary (Bob) Lucin, and Steve Jr. and her two grandchildren, Nicole (Matthew) Sardisco and Bobby (Michelle) Lucin.
She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Milena Sunjka and Mary Grgas, nieces and nephews, Elayne, Renee (Bo), Larry, Dane (Brankica) and Marijan (Karen), great-nephews, Dusan (Katarina), Anton (Shannon), Vlade, and great-niece Milena.
