Sister Magdalen Basick, SNJM, 105, died March 12, 2021 in Lake Oswego. Due to COVID-19, a funeral Mass will be celebrated later.
Magdalen was the daughter of Matt and Anna Markovich Basick, who both came from Croatia in the 1900s but met and married in Colorado. Magdalen grew up on a farm near Helvetia, Ore. When she was 18 mos. old her father was killed in a railroad accident; her mother marrying her stepfather John Yurkovich when she was 8. Educated in a two-room elementary school, she completed her high school years as a boarder at St. Mary's Academy, Portland. Like her two older sisters, she entered the Sisters of the Holy Names after graduation, eventually receiving the name Sister Ruth Ann Mary. Her siblings included sisters, Sister Mary Doloreen (Catherine). Marie, Sister Joseph Mary (Mary), Anne, Matilda (Plowman); brother, Daniel; and half-brother, Emil.
Sister Magdalen had a long career in education both as a teacher and a principal in SNJM schools in Oregon and Washington. Her last and longest ministry was at Holy Redeemer in North Portland, first as a beloved junior high teacher and later as volunteer staff in the school and parish.
Most recently, she lived at Mary's Woods at Marylhurst where in January she happily celebrated her 105th birthday and her 85th anniversary as a Sister of the Holy Names.
