Maria Anna Conratt passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 86, March 6, 2022.
Maria was born in Gata, Croatia, March 18, 1935, to Vlado and Maria Vukovich. Separated from her biological family during World War II, Maria was raised by Andreas and Maria Hodap, first in Radikovci, Croatia, then in Wagna, Austria. Maria immigrated to Portland in 1955, where she lived with her uncle and aunt, Pete and Laura Vukovich.
In 1963, Maria married Sam Conratt. Possessed with a superhuman work ethic and endurance to match, Maria spent the next several decades deftly juggling duties as the consummate homemaker, gourmet chef, caregiver and surrogate mom to anyone in need – all while raising her three kids: son, Robert; daughter, Laurie; and husband, Sam. Maria's warmth, generosity, style and sense of humor made the Conratt home a social hub for family, friends and neighbors. Maria also was an accomplished tailor, specializing in designing, sewing and altering wedding dresses.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Ivan, Nick, Andy and Joe; sisters, Anka, Milena, Liz and Ann; and grandson, Anthony. She is survived by her son, Robert (Linda); daughter, Laurie (Jon); and grandsons, Derek, Michael and Calder.
