Dob: 81
Born in Nova Ljeskovica, Croatia on August 29, 1943, Maria met the love of her life, Pero Lovric, in Požega, Croatia. After a whirlwind courtship, they married on December 31, 1961. Their love story began serendipitously as they sat together on a bench waiting for a train. A passerby, assuming they were a couple, asked if they had any children, to which Pero jokingly replied, "Yes, we have a daughter," even though he had yet to learn Maria’s name.
In pursuit of a better life, they moved to Innsbruck, Austria in 1966, and later their wanderlust led them to Canada, where they settled and became citizens in 1972. Maria traveled extensively, returning to Europe 11 times and embarking on numerous bus tours across Canada and the USA.
Maria was a generous and loving person, known for assisting those less fortunate, including providing shelter for homeless individuals and stray animals. Despite mobility issues in her later years, she continued to support her neighbours, finding ways to help or simply keeping them company to ensure they were not alone.
Maria was a formidable and independent woman, never hesitating to stand up for those she cared about. Though she was small in stature, her strength and resolve were immense.
Maria is survived by her loving husband, Pero; her daughter, Suzi (Darwyn); grandsons, Daniel, Erik (Dani), and Kristofer (Cede); great-grandchildren, Greyson and Cecelia; and her brothers, Milan (Barbara) Horvat and Josip (Ilonka) Horvat, along with many nieces, nephews, and their children.
She was predeceased by her mother, Dragica Horvat, and her fathers, Pavao Bulawa, who was tragically killed in World War II . & Stjepan Horvat
Funeral arrangements will be determined at a later date.
