Mary was born in the small town of Licki Novi, Gospić, in Croatia on December 8, 1928 to parents George and Dragica Saban. George left for Canada shortly after Mary was born in the hopes of finding an easier life for the family with plans to bring them over after settling.

During his time away, World War II broke out and Mary and Dragica managed to survive on their own but not without tribulations. After the war, Mary went on to marry Milan (Mike) Kosovic on January 7, 1947, and later that year welcomed daughter Katica (Katherine). In 1949 a son, George (Juré), was born but sadly passed away a few months later. In 1951 Dragica left Croatia to join George in Canada, and in 1952, Mike and Mary welcomed a son, Anthony (Tony). Coincidentally, Mary's parents, who were in Canada, had another child also in 1952, daughter Georgina (Gina), a sister twenty-four years younger that Mary would not meet until she was able to join her family in Canada in 1957.

After immigrating to Canada with Mike, Katherine and Tony, Mary and her family settled down into their new life in Vancouver, learning English and adapting to new and very different surroundings and customs. Mary's greatest love was being with her family, close relatives and friends, and she ensured that every gathering had enough food to feed everyone three times over. Everyone loved the sarma made from the sour cabbage Mary made in barrels in the wine cellar.

However, it was Mary's apple strudel that was most famous, and she was affectionately known by many in the Lower Mainland as the "strudel lady". Mary would tirelessly make the amazing pastry for churches, birthday's, wedding and baby showers, Sunday family gatherings - no requests were denied and you could often find her making two or three at a time. Her house always smelled divine of cinnamon and apples. When not cooking or baking, Mary could be found in her amazing garden full of all the freshest vegetables, or planting fuchsias and dahlias, or doing one of her many intricate needlepoints. She also knit a plethora of slippers, crocheted beautiful table clothes and doilies, and knit exquisite wool sweaters for family and friends – all will be cherished.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, George and Dragica Saban, her husband, Mike Kosovic (2010), and her son Tony Kosovic (2019). Mary is survived by her daughter, Katherine Newcombe and grandchildren Kevin Crossley and Kristine Wallin (husband Shay, children Sydney and Peyton), her daughter-in-law Shelley Kosovic and grandchildren Catherine Kosovic, Michael Kosovic, Jennifer Kosovic Haivarlis (husband Greg, children William and Zoe), and Nicole Mustedanagić (husband Haris, child Liam) and her sister Gina Simpson (husband Bill, children Jordan Simpson with Cara Schneider, and Alanna Belding with husband Kyle Belding and children Maverick and Faith).

Mary was affectionately called baba by all of her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and surrogate grandchildren from close family and friends that did not have the privilege of knowing their own grandparents. She had so much love and kindness to give, which she did so effortlessly with family, friends and all who needed her warmth and caring. There are not enough words to describe how special Mary/baba was, and what she meant to all of us. She was our family matriarch, a graceful, exceptional human being, and truly an angel among us, and she will be missed for all of our days.
