Mary Lou Grgurich Walters

Mary Lou Walters, née Grgurich, 93, of Toms River, New Jersey passed away peacefully at her home on November 7th, 2021.

Born in Clairton, Pennsylvania on December 12th, 1927 to immigrant parents, Mary Lou was the youngest of 8 siblings and was infinitely proud of her Croatian heritage.

She is survived by her 6 children and their spouses: Gregory & wife Anne Walters, Denise & husband Stephen Hickey, Paula & husband Charles Stein, Thomas Walters & partner Annette Stelk, Lee Walters, and Elizabeth & husband Edward Piccone. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren Tary Harrington, Kellin Stein, Katie Stefansky, Caroline & Sarah Walters, Giovanni Piccone, Travis Walters, Cooper Walters, Alana Piccone, Emitt Stein and Lucy Bryant; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Mary Lou graduated in 1949 from the Mercy School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She went on to have a 60-year career as a Registered Nurse. She was registered to practice nursing in 3 states, California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Locally, Mary Lou worked for Community Memorial Hospital and many years for the Ocean Medical Associates in Toms River. Having made Toms River her home in 1955, she was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish where she sang in the choir, was a eucharistic minister and volunteered her time generously to various church organizations.

Her faith was an essential part of her life. Ultimately, her greatest joy in life came from spending time with her large and loving family. Even with a full house she was never hesitant to make friends feel welcomed around her table. She had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and make others laugh too.

We will miss you Mom, Jane, Grams, GG.
