Mato Brizar, 72, of Spotswood, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024 peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at Plainsboro Medical Center.
Born in Sovski Dol, Croatia, he was raised in Bukovlje, Croatia, before coming to the United States in the early 1970s, where he lived in the Ridgewood and Jackson Heights sections of Queens, New York until settling in the Clearwater Community of Spotswood, in 2019 to be closer to his beloved grandson. He was married in 1975 to his wife Alma, who he grew up with in Bukovlje, Croatia. They shared two children, Steven and Maria and celebrated 49 years of marriage a week before his passing. Before retiring in 2017, he was the owner of Mike's Painting in Queens for over 40 years.
During that time, he was proud to have been able to do interior work for friends and neighbors in Jackson Heights as well as many famous musicians and actors who made their homes in New York City. Mato and his family were very involved in Saint Cyril and Methodius Parish. He was well known for his work ethic, sharp sense, his morning routine of enjoying a coffee and reading the paper in the same coffee shop for many years, his great sense of humor and for the kindness and generosity that he extended to anyone that needed a helping hand. Mato enjoyed playing league bocce ball in New York City and, in the early 2000s, his team won a citywide championship which rewarded them with a float in that years Columbus Day Parade.
Predeceased by his parents, Stjepan and Marija Brizar, his siblings, Ana Dujic and Simo, Alojz and Marin Brizar, he is survived by his wife Alma and children, Steven Brizar and his wife, Michelle Gerlich and Maria Carmelo, and; a grandson, Vincent Carmelo.
