Father Ruyechan was born on April 4, 1954, in Braddock, Pennsylvania, the son of William T. (Sr.) and Mary (Vichich) Ruyechan.
He attended Rankin Elementary School in Braddock, and St. Fidelis High School in Herman. After graduating from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, he joined the Franciscans of the Holy Family Custody (Croatian Franciscans) in Chicago. He completed his post-graduate studies at Washington Theological Union, Washington, DC, and was ordained a priest on May 21, 1980.
Father Ruyechan began his priestly ministry as Parochial Vicar of St. Augustine Parish in West Allis, Wisconsin. In 1982, he was named Parochial Vicar of Sacred Heart Parish in South Chicago, Illinois, where he remained three years. He was appointed Pastor of St. Jerome Parish in Chicago in 1985 and served there ten years.
In 1995, Father Ruyechan was appointed Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Sharon, a parish established for the Croatian people of the Sharon and Farrell areas and served there for the next nine years. In 2001, in addition to his assignment as Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish, he was made Administrator of St. Ann Parish, Farrell. He served in both capacities until the Franciscans discontinued their service to the Diocese of Erie in 2004.
In 2005, Father Ruyechan left the Franciscans of the Holy Family Custody and was incardinated in the Diocese of Erie. His first assignment as a diocesan priest was to be Pastor of St. Stephen Parish in Oil City. Several months later he was also made Administrator of St. Venantius Parish, Rouseville. He remained in both positions until 2017. With the implementation of the Diocese of Erie pastoral plan in 2017, Father Ruyechan was appointed Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Farrell, and St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Sharon, where he remained until his death.
Father Ruyechan also served the Diocese of Erie in a number of other capacities, including as Dean of the Oil City Deanery, as a member of the Bishop’s College of Consultors and as a member of the Presbyteral Council. He was named a Minister of Mercy for the Diocese of Erie for the 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Jr. (Billy).
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Noreen Williams Ruyechan (Maine), nieces Alicia (Dave) Guthro (Maine), and Maura Ruyechan (California), a great niece Grace, a great nephew Donovan, and by the parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua and Our Lady of Fatima.
