Mike was born Mijo Skrljac on October 24, 1937, to Petar and Ana (Milasinovic) Skrljac in Plesmo, Croatia. On April 19, 1960, he married his beautiful bride, Katy (Katica Spancic), with whom he shared two children, a daughter and a son. He served in the army in Croatia (formerly Yugoslavia), was a volunteer firefighter and a farmer until he immigrated to the United States in January 1969.
Soon after arriving, Mike became employed by Fairbanks Morse which later changed its name to Pentair. He was a proud Machinist and member of the Steelworkers Union. His employment continued until he retired in 2003. Mike was very proud of his Croatian heritage and was an active member of the Croatian American Social Club of Kansas City. An avid outdoorsman in his younger years, Mike could be found fishing at Wyandotte County Lake on many days.
He had the utmost patience required to catch “the big one”. When not at the lake, he enjoyed tending to the vegetable garden and fruit trees with his wife, ensuring that everything was fruitful, and meticulously mowing his lawn to perfection, taking great pride in his property. During his lifetime, he made many sausages and other smoked meats, made sljivovica when the fruit season was good and was one of the best in roasting a pig.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, his brother (Tomo Skrljac), his sister (Marija Dodik), his sister-in-law (Nada Skrljac), his brother-in-law (Vojin Dodik), and his great granddaughter (Kambrie Vardijan). He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Katy; his daughter, Nancy (Frank) Vardijan and son, Tom (Denise) Skrljac; his grandchildren, Frank Ivan (Ashley) Vardijan, Jennifer (Ian) McLain, Cassandra Skrljac, Joseph (Samantha) Skrljac, Elisabeth Skrljac (Dylan Pendleton), and Matthew Skrljac (Shelden Moon); and by his darling great-grandchildren, Kensley Vardijan, Kaelyn Vardijan, Silas Skrljac, Nora Skrljac, Sutton Skrljac, Paisley Pendleton, Kylee Vardijan, Kelsyn Vardijan, Kamryn Vardijan, Arthur McLain and Lucy McLain. He is also survived by several nieces, a nephew and many friends. Mike will be deeply missed by all those that loved him.
