Milan originally studied to become a Priest, but after deciding it was not his calling, he chose to move. He moved to the US in 1962 having been sponsored by his uncle, John Petrusich of Portland.
In 1964, he married the love of his life, Violet Slunjski, also from Croatia. They were married for 61 years at his death.
In 1967, Milan became a citizen of the United States, one of the crowning achievements of his life. Milan and Violet resided in Gresham until moving to assisted living at the Forum in Happy Valley in 2020. Milan perfected his skills as a baker and later became a bakery manager. He worked for Albertson’s for 21 years and Safeway for 17 years.
Milan was passionate about two sports - soccer & wrestling.
Milan and Violet owned several apartments. Through this venture, Milan became an extremely accomplished painter. He absolutely loved music and memorized all 70’s and 80’s popular hit music. Milan loved to sing and spent much of his spare time singing with and to others.
Milan & Violet made numerous trips to Croatia, Europe and Hawaii in their younger years. They loved to travel together. Their very last trip as a couple was to Texas for the wedding of their beloved nephew.
Milan & Violet shared a lifetime of helping others. They loved to cook, bake, and entertain and once hosted a summer dinner in their backyard for 75 guests. Their house in Gresham was easy to find at Christmas time. It was the most decorated house in town most years!
Milan is survived by his wife, Violet. While the couple had no children, they refer to their nephew Nikolas (Fernald) of Houston, Texas as their son. Milan is also survived by two Petrusich great nieces and three great nephews (Portland) as well as many relatives in Croatia.
Milan’s sister- in-law Milica and brother- in-law Pete Fernald were constantly involved in their life and helped a great deal in Milan’s later years. Milan & Violet treated their son, Nikolas, and daughter, Jaime (Medford) like their own.
Milan made numerous friends of both residents and staff during his five years in Assisted Living at the Forum. He was always involved with activities and won numerous awards. Special thanks to Dain Haller, Mackie Hauser and all Forum personnel as Milan’s health began to fail and additional support and love were needed. A special thanks to Harvey Fullwiley who Milan loved to sing with and who sang for him at the end of his life.
