Resurrection Cemetery

Civil Engineer & NYC Deputy Commissioner, Former Islander, 86 Nicholas S. Ilijic, 86, of Tinton Falls, NJ, passed away on July 4th, 2024, after a battle with cancer. Nick was born in South Brooklyn, NY, the only child of Nikola and Mary Ilijic.

Nicholas attended Harren High School in Manhattan, receiving awards in History and Geometry. He graduated from Polytechnical Institute of Brooklyn with a BS in Civil Engineering and went on to achieve his Professional Engineering license. He started his 38-year career with New York City in the Brooklyn Borough President's office Sewer Division. He moved to the NYC Dept of Environmental Protection where he rose to the position of First Deputy Commissioner.

He served as President of both the NYS and NYC Municipal Engineers Associations and received many awards and citations. He retired from the city and worked for the engineering firms of Parsons Brinkeroff and Sverdrup Inc.

Nick married his neighborhood sweetheart, Dorothy in 1961. After making a home in Brooklyn for several years they moved to Staten Island. They enjoyed traveling across the US as well as to Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. They retired and relocated to Greenbrier Oceanaire in Waretown, NJ and then settled in Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls NJ. He enjoyed playing Pool and Poker and Rummy-O. He was a music lover, an excellent dancer, and enjoyed the opera. He was very interested in history and particularly proud of his Croatian heritage.

Nicholas is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, his daughter Mary Perrella and his son Stephen Ilijic, and his two grandsons, Sean-Michael Walker and Destin Perrella.
