Paul Bernard Buljat, Sr., 94, of Emerald Isle, passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2022. Paul was born on May 23, 1928 in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania to the late, Mate Buljat of Pridraga, Croatia, and Julia Pilanchar Buljat of Forbes Road, Pennsylvania.
Paul started his career at Bethlehem Steel working the coal mines, but he quickly chose to join the United States Marine Corps. Paul fought alongside his Marine brothers in the Korean War. During the Vietnam War, Paul flew many hours supporting the Marines on the ground. Paul was part of the VMGR-152 squadron that innovated the C-130’s various uses such as troop transport, cargo, gunship, refueling, and bringing fallen Marines home.
He said they even used it to successfully airdrop an excavator to aid in the rescue of trapped Marines in the jungle. With over 16,500 flight hours in the C-130, Paul was chosen to lead the Marine crew of the new KC-130F in the Navy’s Blue Angels as its first Flight Engineer. Paul retired from the Blues and his military service in 1972 to become an Aerospace Engineering Technician at MCAS Cherry Point for the rest of his career. He was a C-130 expert and considered it “his plane.”
Paul was an avid outdoorsman. When not looking to sky, he was looking for a fishing spot. He spent many hours with his brother-in-law and nephews bass fishing in North Carolina’s various lakes and rivers. He also enjoyed deer hunting with them as well. He spent his final years enjoying the beach and the coastal lifestyle.
He is survived by his son, Paul Bernard “Bernie” Buljat, Jr.; daughter, Stephenie Buljat Conner (Michael); and granddaughter, Elizabeth Dawn Bogett (Rick). He is also survived by his siblings, Helen Meredith (Hugh), Delores Cook, Nick Buljat, and Joseph Buljat (Uni).
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Frances Conway Buljat, and his siblings, Michael Buljat, Anne Burnette, Catherine Staruch, Martha Phillips, and John Buljat.
