In the 1960s Peter emigrated to the United States soon after completing his military service in the Yugoslavian Navy. A staunch opponent of the communist regime Peter left to pursue his fortunes in the United States, never knowing if he might return.

Trained as a large-scale welder, Peter started his American life working in Port Kearny. He left this profession and the security of the Iron Workers Union to become an independent general contractor.

Through hard work and fierce determination Peter expanded his expertise in home improvement until he became a builder of luxury homes. Over the more than 40 years of his self-employment Peter and his loving wife Carmen worked tirelessly together to establish their American dream. This dream included building their own home and hosting as many friends and family as possible in it. Their home was known for its open door policy and for its constant flow of good food and easy company.

For all he managed to achieve and share with others Peter was a grateful immigrant who became a proud American citizen. As his working years drew to a close he made it a point to employ newer immigrants and to treat them fairly.

Raised along the Dalmatian coast and within its culture dedicated to family and faith Peter was a devout Catholic and a devoted family man all his adult life. Upon the liberation of Croatia in the 1990s he immediately rebuilt his childhood home and provided for his mother and widowed sister until their deaths. He was known for performing quiet acts of kindness and generosity.

Peter was a parishioner at St. Michael’s of Union, NJ and of Sts. Cyril and Methodius and Rafael of New York, NY. He was an avid gardener, fisherman and wine maker. He was a member of the St. Peter’s Benevolent Society and served a term as its President.

He is predeceased by his siblings Šime, Ivanica, Mara, and Ivan, his father Ivan and his mother Ana. He is also predeceased by his beloved daughter-in-law, Christine Mackiewicz-Papic. He is survived by his wife Carmen and their children Donat and Mariette as well as his grandchildren Natalie, Olivia, Donny and Rachel, and by his sister Danica as well as his many nieces and nephews.
