Peter Vela (June 17, 1941 to September 9, 2024) was born in a small European fishing village, Podgora, Yugoslavia: modern day Croatia. At 17, he made his way to America and attended the University of New Orleans and studied electrical engineering. Pete settled in Plaquemines Parish, started a family and had a 27-year career with Shell Oil Company. The community knew Pete as a family man, hard worker and all-around good guy. He enjoyed a slow-paced life and a love of the great outdoors: fishing, shrimping, gardening and tending to the vast array of fruit trees that adorned his lawn.

His love for family is evident in the many fond memories of boating, card games, delicious meals and watching sports together – especially the LSU Tigers and the New Orleans Saints – Who Dat! His passion for life and warm smile will be forever remembered and we'll toast a glass of wine in his honor on every occasion.

Peter Vela is preceded by his parents Mate and Vendelina Vela and brother, Ivan Vela; survived by his brother, Leon Vela. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 41 years, May Vela, and six children, Jshonda Vela (LJ Galmiche), Vendelin Vela, Ana Vela, Melissa Vela, Herman Vela (Bobbi) and Julia Vela (Jody Miller). Grandchildren: Vendelina Romero, Daniel Schneidt, Michael Brewer II (Felicity), Nickalus Brewer, Sophie Miller, Emma Miller, Logan Miller, Luke Miller, Curt Dubois and Bevan Dubois. Great Grandchildren: Drake Romero, Vaughn Romero, Patience Brewer, Le Brewer, Michael Brewer III. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a donation to the Audubon Society to honor Pete's love of nature.
