We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Simeon Kovacic on July 31, 2025, after a brief illness.
He was 89 and lived a very full life. He leaves his wife, Penny, of 57 years; his sons, Gregory, Charles and Andrew; his daughter-in-laws, Kelly and Cindy; and his grandchildren, Luca, Mia, Ashley, Drew and Ethan.
Simeon was born in Banj, Croatia in 1936, the oldest son of Marija Blagdanic and Jerolim Kovacic. One of nine children, he is survived by his youngest brother Ivan Kovacic of Fairfield, Ct, and his sister Stose Kraljev of Banj, Croatia.
In the aftermath of WWII, at the age of sixteen, he left former Yugoslavia. He lived in refugee camps for four years in Italy which were under the auspices of the United Nations before emigrating to the United States. He was drafted into the US Army, but, enlisted in the US Air Force. He served in Korea, Japan and throughout the United States, earning his citizenship after 3 years of service. Upon his honorable discharge he was hired by the Merchants Bank of NY, which was eventually acquired by Valley National Bank, where he worked for 41 years. He was Vice President of Operations and manager of their 5th avenue branch. He graduated from New York University in 1976.
Simeon’s passion was soccer. While in Italy he played semi-pro and for many years he coached his sons’ soccer teams. He was actively involved in the Rye Youth Soccer Club from its start. Upon his retirement in 2001, he became a soccer referee with the Westchester Referee Soccer Organization.
There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
