Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at the age of 95. He was a humble man, with a strong Catholic faith, unmatched work ethic, and great love for his family.
Dearly loved by his children Ante (Christine), Ivan, Anna, and Theresa, and grandchildren Allie, Mitch, Benny, Maxi, Ivan Junior and Tony.
Slavko was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend Marija, his parents Ante and Ana, and siblings Ivan, Jozo, Petar, Marija, Iva, and Tonka.
Slavko was born on April 18, 1931 in the village of Dobrince, parish Medov Dolac, near Imotski, Croatia. Together, with his younger brother, Petar, he fled Yugoslavia, becoming a refugee in Austria in 1957 before arriving in Canada in 1958 through the kind sponsorship of the Catholic Church. Slavko first lived in Hamilton before making his way to Winnipeg where he met and married the love of his life, Marija. There he worked in his trade as a bricklayer and stone mason on job sites throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan, eventually starting his first business.
In 1966 Slavko and his brother Petar and their families moved to Kitchener-Waterloo. He and his brother established Granic Brothers Construction completing masonry brick and block laying projects throughout southwestern Ontario before venturing into building high quality custom homes throughout the region of Waterloo.
Slavko was a former member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish in Kitchener, a founding member of Holy Family Croatian Parish in Kitchener (Bridgeport) and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and St. Michael's in Waterloo. A member of various Croatian Canadian organizations and a decades-long subscriber to a diaspora weekly published in Winnipeg and a monthly published in London, England, he donated his time to work on renovations to the K-W Croatia Club in Breslau and donated to help establish the Chair of Croatian Language and Culture at the University of Waterloo.
Slavko will be greatly missed by his sister-in-law Angela, many nieces and nephews and Kumovi in Canada and Croatia.
A special thanks for the exceptional care provided by Marilou and Maricel, Carepartners and Paramed staff and Dr. Erinn Owens during this past year as his health began to decline.
