Beloved mother of Biserka and Robert (Susan). Proud and loving grandmother of Alec (Christine), Stephanie (Nick), Ana (Dejan), and Maja (Ivan), and cherished great-grandmother to Fran, Marta, and Filipa in Zagreb, Croatia.
Stephanie was an outgoing, loving, and tenacious soul, always completely devoted to her family. She was born in Kurpes Gorica, a small village nestled in the green hills near Zagreb, Croatia. After enduring the hardships and occupations of World War II, she met her husband Mijo, and together they moved to Zagreb where they began building a new life, a family, and a home—quite literally, brick by brick.
In 1965, with the hope of reuniting family and the promise of a better future, they emigrated to Canada, settling in Hamilton, Ontario. With no language, no job, and no friends, the early years were difficult, but Stephanie faced every challenge with courage, determination, and faith. Through sheer hard work, sacrifice, and an unbreakable spirit, she created a warm and loving home for her family.
After more than thirty years at Chedoke–McMaster Hospitals, Stephanie retired and enjoyed a well-earned time of rest—traveling with Mijo and doting on her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. When Mijo passed away in 1993, she carried on living an independent life with grace and strength, pouring her love and energy into her growing family and friends embracing each day with kindness and gratitude and becoming everyone’s best Grandmother.
Visiting Grandma’s house meant you instantly became the most important person in the world. You never left without a lovingly packed meal (“for later, when you get hungry”) and a bit of pocket money (“for some dessert later”). No one could love you more than Grandma.
Her endless love, warmth, and generosity will be missed beyond words and remembered in our hearts forever.
