Ledyard - Stephen M. Novic, 84, U.S. Navy (Retired) passed away peacefully, at his home in Ledyard April 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Steve was born in 1941 in Detroit, Mich. He was the eldest son of Frank and Mary Gjurinovic. He graduated from Royal Oak Dondero High School in 1959.
Steve served 21 and a half years in the U.S. Navy Submarine Force from 1962-1983, retiring as a Senior Chief Fire Control Technician. He served on the USS James Madison, USS Henry L. Stimson, USS Stonewall Jackson, USS Lafayette, and USS Daniel Webster. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and inducted into the U.S. Submarine Veterans Holland Club Membership. He was presented with the Quilt of Valor on Nov. 9, 2018.
After his military career, Stephen joined the Electric Boat Division in Groton in 1983 as a Technical Writer Editor, retiring after 17 and a half years.
Stephen enjoyed many hobbies including music, community theater, sailing, skiing, motorcycling, and bowling.
He joined the Ledyard Lions Club in 1990, holding many positions from Club Treasurer to President, and District Governor for 52 Clubs in four counties. He received many awards including recognition as Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, Lion of the Year, Loyal Shepherd Fellow, and Ambassador of Sight. He chaired and called Lions Bingo every Wednesday night, later helping to cook in the kitchen, and also chaired the town's Memorial Day parade.
Stephen married Teresa Campagna in Ledyard on July 31, 2004, in their backyard.
He is survived by his brothers, Michael and David Novic (Phoebe); his daughters, Jacquelyn Andersen (Nate) and Susan Childers; his son Stephen Novic Jr. (Lisa); and his stepdaughter Amy Jacobitz (Darcy). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his half-sister Marija Sambolec of Croatia.
