Preminuo:24.04.2026. (Burnaby, Britanska Kolumbija, Kanada)
Dob: 87
Steve (Stjepan) passed away on April 24th, 2026. He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Helen (Jelka) and numerous nieces and nephews. Steve was born in Kostanjevac, Žumberak, Croatia, to the late Štefica and Franjo Novosel on December 12, 1938. He grew up in a small town with his mother, his late brother Tomo, and his late sister Dragica.
From a very young age, Steve learned the values of hard work, resilience, and perseverance. Following the loss of his father during World War II, life changed profoundly for the family. At the age of seven, as the eldest son, Steve stepped into responsibilities beyond his years, helping to support his family.
These early experiences deeply shaped him and helped form a strong family bond built on love, determination, and mutual care—values that stayed with him throughout his life.
At the age of 15, Steve moved to Zagreb, Croatia, to train as an auto body painter. It was there that he reconnected with Helen. Though they had attended the same elementary school and lived in neighbouring towns, little did they know their paths would one day lead them to fall in love and build a life together. They began dating in 1960, where Steve would often visit the shop where Helen worked in Zagreb. They were married in 1961.
Steve and Helen made their home in Zagreb until 1962, when they moved to Germany, where Steve worked as a painter. After a year, they immigrated to Canada, where they would settle and build their life together. Steve began his career in Canada as an auto body painter, and in 1987, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to start building and selling homes—a pursuit he continued until his retirement.
Steve and Helen were deeply respected for their guidance, support, and steady presence in the lives of others. In recognition of these qualities, they were honoured to be chosen as godparents and sponsors to many children of close friends and family.
Whether it was faith celebrations, festive occasions, or simply a gathering of family and friends, Steve cherished every opportunity to celebrate together. These occasions were often marked by laughter, warmth, and tradition—especially his love of roasting lamb on a spit, surrounded by the people he held dear.
One of Steve’s great passions was hunting, and he eagerly looked forward to his annual trips with his close-knit hunting group. He also enjoyed camping, spending many summers with family and friends, creating lasting memories in the outdoors.
Steve will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his humour, his warmth, and his ever-present friendliness.
