Dob: 87

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, dida and pradida Tomislav Malenica. Tomislav was born in Ricice, Croatia, on May 1, 1934, to parents Filip and Iva Malenica. He was a strong, healthy man who successfully survived a lung cancer scare over 18 years ago but now, after a brief illness, left us sooner than anticipated.

Tomislav came to Canada in 1958, and after landing in Montreal, he made his way to Calgary, where he had some distant family. In 1962, he brought over his wife Maria after being married by proxy. They had a proper wedding in Calgary and welcomed their son Philip a year later. In 1965, they moved to Vancouver, and their family was complete when Diana was born.

Tomislav was a proud, hardworking man, he loved his trade as a pipefitter/welder, and he often travelled to various locations to take on a job. He never shied away from challenging jobs and was always happy to point out that he worked on the Pacific Coliseum and Harbour Centre tower. Tomislav took pleasure in the simple things in life, great meals surrounded by loved ones, going on picnics with friends, tending to his garden and keeping up with the news. Tomislav actively supported his Croatian community and contributed to the building of the church, the richmond picnic site and the Croatian Cultural Centre. His great joy was travelling to his homeland to visit family and friends.

Tomislav was predeceased by his parents Filip and Iva, and siblings, Mara, Maca, Ivan and Marinko.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Maria, son Philip, daughter Diana (Daniel), granddaughters Natasha (Jesse), Cassandra and Marina, and great-grandchildren Emmett and Penelope.

He is also survived by his loving sister Tonka in Stobrec, Croatia and his brother Nick (Mary) in Kelowna, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family throughout Croatia and Canada.

Dida would do anything for his granddaughters and was well known at their schools when he picked them up. He also was an honorary dance Dida as he would take them to their extracurricular activities and competitions. Throughout Covid, his favourite times were when his family would visit on a Friday night, and he could see the little ones. He will be greatly missed by all of us, but we have many wonderful memories to hold onto, which provide us great comfort.
