Left to mourn are his loving wife of 59 years, Marina; his children Drina (Alex), Velimir (Julie), John (Melissa); his grandchildren Anna and Oliver; his brothers Niko (Gala), Filip (Ruza); brother-in-law and best friend, John Vrsaljko; his sisters, Franjka Perkovic (the late Bozo) and Iva Suca (the late Franjo); and many nieces, nephews, family and friends in Canada, Bosnia Croatia, Germany and Australia.
Tomo was led into heaven by his parents Andja and Ivan; his brother Martin (the late Luca); sister Ljuba; and nephew Antic. The family patriarch, Tomo was the first to arrive in Canada in 1956. He came in search of freedom, opportunity and to build a life and family. After landing in Halifax by sea, Tomo worked his way across the country, first settling the family in the mining town of Cassiar, BC, followed by a final move to Hamilton, where he worked as a millwright at National Steel Car for 25 years.
Today, the broader Omazic family numbers 100+ people strong in Canada. We are all reflections of his courage, kindness, and generosity. Nothing brought him more joy than any occasion where his family came together. On this somber occasion, his family unites in expressing our endless love, gratitude and admiration for the man that was here first, but always put himself last. We owe him everything that we are and that we have.
A private funeral service took place on Monday, May 17 at Our Lady of the Angels Cemetery. The Omazic family regrets that Tomo’s many relatives, extended family and friends were unable to pay their respects due to Public Health restrictions but are greatly soothed by the outpouring of love and condolences received. We look forward to celebrating Tomo’s life with all of you soon. The Omazic family would also like to thank all the dedicated medical professionals for the compassionate care they extended to Tomo in over 10 years of cancer and, most recently, COVID-19 treatments.
