Vera Katalin Milicic, daughter of the late Veronika Klenota and Ferenc Käszdorf, passed away 7 October 2022. She was 86 years old. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Marika Malacorda, of Geneva Switzerland, and her nephew, Andreas Malacorda.
She is survived by her husband, Matko Milicic, MD, known to his friends as "doctor Matko" and many friends.
Vera was born in Budapest, 15 May 1936, in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary, and underwent many adventures during the Second World War, including being abducted with her family by German soldiers and brought to Czechoslovakia.. After the Second World War she remained in Hungary, but was forced to flee to Austria with her sister during the Soviet invasion and Hungarian Revolution in 1956. As a refugee, she moved to Basel, Switzerland, where she attended the University of Basel, and worked in the pharmaceutical industry.
In addition, she became an international table tennis champion and played for the Swiss national team. It was in Switzerland that she met and married her husband in 1960, and devoted herself to the advancement of his career.
When he received an Orthopedic Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, she accompanied him to the United States, taught herself English, and eventually, with her husband, became a United States citizen in 1976.
Vera and Matko have resided in New Orleans since 1971, where they found numerous Hungarian and Yugoslav friends. She was an avid reader of literature in English, German, and Hungarian, solving crossword puzzles in all three languages. She loved to cook, entertain friends, play the piano, and travel. Vera and Matko loved New Orleans; they enjoyed Mardi Gras along with the other festivities in the city.
Matko was a long time member of crew of Bacchus. In 2021 Vera and Matko founded the Vera and Dr. Matko Milicic Foundation.
